Energy Efficiency Symposium – Made in Germany 2009 The SGC organized an Energy Efficiency Symposium on 16 June 2009 at the Marriott Hotel Singapore. Guest-of-Honour was Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Minister for Environment and Water. The symposium was the highlight of the week-long events where trade delegates from Germany engaged in business-matching with local companies in the energy efficiency business.
Dr Tim Philippi, Executive Director SGC welcomed the participants of the symposium. He informed attendees of the SGC's core task which is to promote bilateral econmic relations by providing a platform for German companies as well as local companies in Singapore by offering practical support though business services and events. Dr Philippi pointed out that the aim of of the symposium was to explore potentials for energy efficiency in Singapore and to boost the cooperation between Germany and Singapore in this field.
Ms Christiana Markert, Counsellor, Charges d’ affaires a.i. at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany told participants in her welcome address that Singapore and Germany shared a similar situation: both countries have few natural resources and are thus dependent on energy imports. According to her Germany aims to dramatically restructure its energy supply by 2020. Germany’s main targets are: to double the share of renewable energy in heat generation and to increase it to at least 30% in electricity and to double energy efficiency, compared to the levels of 1990. Ms Markert said that Germany estimates that the growth of the environment technology sector will translate into approximately 500 000 jobs in the country in 2020 - as to 280 000 today.
Dr Khor informed participants about the lion state’s program and initiative with regard to energy efficiency measures. She highlighted the creation of Energy Efficiency Programme Office (E2PO) which is under the National Environment Authority (NEA) that aims to promote the adoption and improvement of energy efficiency measures in all sectors. Minister Khor mentioned the Design Efficiency Scheme (DfE), the Grant for Energy Efficient Technologies (GREET), the Singapore Certified Energy Manager (SCEM) Training Grant. Furthermore, representatives of German companies; eclareon Berlin, H. Waldmann GmbH & Co. KG, International Education Center for Energy Solutions (EnEd), ERCO Lighting, Distribution International, Bäro GmbH + Co. KG, energydesign asia - Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH + energydesign (Shanghai) Co., Ltd, Scherz + Scherz Architekten, Ahura World Groupo informed participants during the symposium on their latest products on energy efficiency technologies. In addition, Mr Ang Kian Seng, Deputy Director, Technology & Innovation Development, Building & Construction Authority (BCA) and Mr Vincent Low, HON General Secretary & Chairman EE Committee, Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS) spoke on energy efficiency related topics as well.
Apart from the symposium, the SGC organized numerous business-matching between the visiting German delegates with Singaporean companies to explore possible collaborations. The trade delegates
from Germany were very satisfied with their meetings in Singapore. They also praised the SGC for the excellent organization of the whole event.
