On 13 December 2016, the SGC Healthcare committee lead a site visit to Sivantos, one of the leading manufacturers of hearing aids. Participants got a glimpse into their latest innovations and products.
We had a successful event with Dr Peik Achtert, General Manager Singapore, Commerzbank AG on Monday. The "Meet the CEO" format allowed for an interactive session with questions from participants that Dr Achtert addressed with personal anecdotes and advice. Participants had the chance to hear how to climb the corporate ladder fast, and adapt to new environments. We thank Dr Achtert and all participants for joining the third and last YPN event for 2016. We look forward to new events next year!

Our 4th SGC Committee Networking Evening focused on bringing together all SGC committee participants. Over 50 participants discussed current business trends and developments in 2016 / 2017 over German food and drinks. The SGC is grateful for this excellent partnership and thanks all chairman for their stewardship in 2016.
The SGC hosted a dialogue between ESB Reutlingen and SGC members to discuss employability of business engineers in Singapore. The lively exchange of experiences highlighted the need of dialogue between academia and the corporate world to find best-in-class solutions for both.

We are very pleased about the insightful conversation with Minister Chan Chun Sing, Minister in Prime Minister's Office and the Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) at the SGC Business Luncheon.
From 7th to 10th November 2016, in cooperation with SBS, the SGC organized a 4-day trade mission from Germany to Singapore for companies offering technologies, products and services in the field of public transport, smart mobility and smart cities. In the conference the participants introduced their companies and had the chance to meet potential business partners from Singapore.
The 15. Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business took place in Hong Kong from 3-5 November 2016. SGC organized at the APK a Breakfast Session on “How FTAs support trade relations”. We would like to thank Ms Brigitte Zypries, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Dr. Volker Treier, Deputy CEO, The Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) and the Executive Directors of the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce in Asia-Pacific for sharing their views and updating us about the current situation regarding FTAs between the EU and Asia-Pacific.
On 31 Oct 2016, the YPN concluded its second event under the Young Professionals Network (YPN) program. Mr Mervin Yeo, an entrepreneur and networking evangelist, spoke to participants on the mistakes and pitfalls to avoid, along with some tips on navigating the networking landscape.YPN would like to thank Mr Yeo and its participants, and remind you all to stay tuned for the next YPN event happening really soon.

Saj Kumar, Vice President Digital Transformation & IoT SAP Asia Pacific and Japan shared his knowledge and expertise with successful projects in Industrie 4.0. Organized by the IT Committee, the talk and interaction with the participants meant take-away information for everybody.
With the support of the SGC, German National Tourist Board hosted the exclusive kick-off event “Travel Destination Germany” for ITB Asia 2016. Travel agents from the countries Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand took the opportunity to get to know more about the travel destination Germany and the activities of the GNTB.
It has been 26 years since West and East Germany officially became one country. On 3 Oct 2016 we celebrated the Day of German Unity with a reception hosted by the German Embassy Singapore and the SGC.

At the Breakfast Briefing Dr Andreas Respondek, Managing Director of Respondek & Fan Pte Ltd, updated attendees on "Successful Negotiation of Employment Settlement Agreements -5 Mistakes to avoid".
The R&D Committee had the privilege of visiting four research facilities of the National Research Foundation (NRF). They were toured at J-Park Simulator, that tackles the roadmap to a smart industrial park, Autonomous vehicles and Big Data MATSim that design roads for best use in Singapore, Centre for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM) which investigate further uses of sensors and the TUM CREATE research on towards the Ultimate Public Transport that highlighted an electric automobile cab. Prior to the visits, Dr Lim Khiang Wee, Executive Director, CREATE, NRF gave an update of the NRF’s structure and current funding schemes.
Visit of Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mechelen to SGC
Frédéric Achten and Petra Van Bouwelen from Voka - Kamer van Koophandel Antwerpen-Waasland (Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mechelen) visited the SGC to exchange experiences and ideas.
The symposium took place for the delegation from Germany in the field of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Buildings. The participants presented their products and services and had the chance to exchange information with local experts.
The SGC welcomed the business delegation in the field of “Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Buildings” from Germany. After a tour through the German Centre they were briefed about politics, economy, legal and financial aspects in Singapore.
On 14 September, the SGC, along with Ambassador Dr Michael Witter, Embassy to the Federal Republic of Germany, were invited to a dialogue session with Minister of State, Dr Koh Poh Koon, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Trade & Industry. Members of the SGC Board, Advisory Council and Chairmen of the Committees contributed with industry insights to the discussion on the future economy of Singapore.
Dr Jörg Ellerkmann, Managing Director TRUMPF Singapore Pte Ltd spoke about the future smart factory. In this talk, Dr Ellerkmann introduced “AXOOM”, a digital platform for the factory of the future. He showed participants how machines built by any manufacturer are connected, and use the data they collect help customers organise their production .
The conference ASEAN Insights took place at IHK Frankfurt am Main. Representatives of all German chambers in ASEAN were there and discussed business opportunities in the AEC with the companies present on site.

Luncheon on "Crisis in Europe – No End in Sight?" with Dr Jörg Krämer, Chief Economist, Commerzbank
At the SGC Business Luncheon on 2 September Dr Jörg Krämer, Chief Economist, Commerzbank shared his perspective on the topic "Crisis in Europe – No End in Sight?". He commented on the Brexit, the future of the EU and the currency union in particular.

At the Germany-Singapore Business Forum our Executive Director Dr Tim Philippi moderated the panel session “Advancing Partnerships between Singapore and Germany – Charting the Next Course”. We would like to thank the four panelists Dr Florian Doetzer (Composite Cluster Singapore), Prof Lam Khin Yong (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), Mr Tan Chong Kooi (Armstrong Industrial Corporation Limited) and Mr Martin Strommer (Ncinga Innovations Private Limited) for their valuable contributions.

It was learned in the meeting that fintech uses software technology usually by startups to create easy payments system, money transfers, loans, fundraising and even asset management usually via mobile application.
On 14 July, in collaboration with Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI), the SGC organised an Investors' Luncheon showcasing Eastern Germany’s business advantages and high-tech market potential available to Singaporean enterprises. Besides presentations from GTAI’s CEO, Dr Jürgen Friedrich and his team, representatives from Singaporean companies also shared their success stories on how they entered the German market. The event was concluded with a fruitful question and answer session with all event speakers.

He spoke about "Asia's diamonds in the Rough- the High Potential of Frontier Markets for E-commerce". With 16 e-commerce companies across Asia, Asia Pacific Internet Group has leveraged on the digital age to reach out to expanded networks.

SGC Conference on Industrie 4.0 for Singapore Manufacturers - An Introduction to the Factory of the Future
On 24 June 2016, the SGC organised a conference on Industrie 4.0, with speakers from companies at the forefront of the Smart Technology movement. We were honoured to welcome Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister-in-charge of the Smart Nation Initiative as our guest of honour. He welcomed the participants with a short speech on Singapore's receptiveness to sophisticated digital advancements in order to stay ahead of the curve and on the frontier of smart technologies.
SGC Luncheon on "Low Interest Rates, Regulations, Digitisation – the Triple Challenge for Banks and Their Customers"
On 3 June, the SGC was honoured to welcome Mr Wolfgang Kirsch, CEO of DZ Bank to speak to our participants. He covered financial issues involving the low interest rate, and other challenges to banks and their customers today.
Invited guests during the SGC R&D committee meeting 3 June 2016, were Dr Xi Zhang, Head of Global Innovation Bonding Wire of the technology group HERAEUS, and Mr Michael Stoss, Founder and CEO of the startup Voices2Choice Singapore Pte Ltd.
Breakfast Briefing on Doing Business Down Under: Market entry structures and regulatory requirements in Australia
Our speakers, Mr David P. Selig and Dr Angelika Yates, from Addisons, shared information about the laws and structures in place for those interested to do business in Australia. They gave examples through recent experiences and models for success before addressing queries during the question and answer session.
Ms Selena Ling, Head of Treasury Reasarch and Strategy at OCBC Bank, shared insights into major macroeconomic developments of the current year and what impact they have on German businesses operating not only in Singapore, but also in the rest of Asia.
The annual Asparagus Under the Stars, co-organised by the German Association and SGC was held at the Capella Singapore amidst wonderful ocean view, great company and of course, a fantastic dinner.
The SGC Committee Chairmen discussed future activities of the committees in 2016 and beyond. They also assessed the committees' events and undertakings from 2015 as well as the meetings of the first half of 2016.
Mr Choon Leng Lim, Head, Energy & Chemicals EDB gave an overview on Jurong Island 2.0 to the committee. He also shared to the group the government's future plans for the island to make it more attractive to investors.

Breakfast Briefing on 'What Does Social Selling Mean? Understanding How You Can Leverage on LinkedIn for New Business Opportunities'- An SGC IT Committee Initiative
Ms Lee began gave an overview of LinkedIn’s key business models, including market, advertising and sales solutions. She then continued her presentation, explaining the practice of social selling and emphasised the importance of building up a full profile and how to use LinkedIn for selling. At the breakfast briefing on the 31th March, Mr Choo Eng Chuan (Partner Ernst & Young Solutions LLP, International and Corporate Tax Services) gave key insights to the audience about the Singaporean Budget 2016. Among the many aspects, Mr Choo mentioned that there were some essential changes and adoptions in this year’s budget that were from a particular interest for the audience.
At this breakfast briefing, Mr David Marsh, Managing Director and Founder of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), and Prof John Mourmouras, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Greece, shared their view on the political economy in Europe and Greece. Mr Mash explained the work of the OMFIF and assessed the current state of the Eurozone as well as its future while Prof Mourmouras shed light on the European debt crisis and the impact within Greece.

Business Luncheon on "Attract, Transform, Create" with Dr Beh Swan Gin, Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB)
At this business luncheon, Dr Beh gave insights into Singapore’s strategy for future economic development. Introducing Singapore’s background as a high-growth economy due to strong investment inflows and workforce growth, Dr Beh also emphasized strong German – Singaporean relations.

Breakfast Briefing on "Investment and Business Opportunities in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City"
Participants joined the briefing to find out more about this rapidly developing area, enjoying an informative discussion on the numerous pillars of support this Eco-City has. With strong support from both governments, including incentives and grants, participants received a clearer understanding of the potential of this area.

Joint Mittlestand & New Technologies Committee meeting on a site visit to DMG MORI Singapore Pte Ltd
The Mittelstand and New Technologies Committees introduced participants to DMG Mori’s Additive Manufacturing Centre of Excellence, which houses advanced technology in additive manufacturing (commonly known as 3D printing). Furthermore, attendees saw for themselves how the robotic-art device could quickly create a product. After the tour, participants were briefed by Mr Joachim Ihrcke, Mittelstand Committee co-chairman, on Industry 4.0, in which additive manufacturing plays a big role.
The SGC organised an Investors' Luncheon held by the Investment and Marketing Corporation of the federal state Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. Under the title “CHECK-IN FOR SUCCESS: Saxony-Anhalt – Business Location For Medical Engineering”, speakers gave insight into the state's investment landscape. The Singaporean guests showed high interest in the various topics presented, taking the opportunity to exchange ideas with the guest speakers from Germany over lunch and the following networking session.
Mr Keith Kok, Director of RHT Digital & Media gave insight into the challenges of managing crises on social media, giving several examples of companies in Singapore. These cases showed that bad management responses to just one comment can go viral on social media, resulting in a bad reputation.
The first B2B of the year organized by the SGC and German Centre at the German Centre, with participants commending the interactive programme and fantastic catering.
The SGC got the ball rolling with its first Business Luncheon of 2016. In addition to the usual lunch set up, it also had a short Lo-Hei ceremony to celebrate a new year. Invited speaker, Ambassador Ong Keng Yong, Ambassador-at-Large to the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke on the formation of ASEAN and its strengths and weaknesses.
Market Exploration ‘IT Security’: German Business Delegation to Singapore, 31 Jan - 4 Feb 2016
This four-day market exploration, funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), took place from 31st January to 4th February 2016. It has been a great opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises from Germany to get to know the field of IT Security in Singapore.
The German delegates met many local experts to exchange know-how and establish initial business contacts. Furthermore, the delegates had the chance to learn from Singaporean companies during site visits, round table discussions and a networking reception.
Moreover, DEinternational wrote a market study including expert interviews with relevant industry players.
SGC Breakfast Briefing on "Establishing a Business Entity in India: Legal Entities Available, Financing Options and Tax Considerations in Light of Recent Changes in the Law"
SGC's first breakfast briefing of the year saw Mr Koczian expound on different types of business entities, funding options and considerations and benefits of starting a business in India.
The HR Committee invited speakers from CPF to clarify new changes in the CPF for 2016 especially situations that attract CPF contributions. Over 50 SGC members joined the well attended event.
