People

 

Very distinctive is the peaceful together of the ethnically-diverse population of 4.8 million. Since its existence the republic emphasized the integration of all cultures to one nation. 75% are Chinese, 13.7% Malay and 8.7% Indians. The remaining 2.6% comprise other ethnic groups, mainly Caucasian and Eurasian. The main practiced religions are Islam, Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism.

 

Language

 

The language of business, but also of administration and in court is English. Official languages are Malay, Chinese and Tamil. Due to historical reasons, Malay is the only national language and also the tongue of the national anthem. Most public signs and publications are authored in English and partly translated in the other official languages, as for example in MRT’s.

Singaporeans learn English and their mother tongue – relevant to their cultural background – mandatory in school. The common Singaporean dialect, called ‘Singlish’, takes getting used to. This dialect is based on English with Chinese and Malay influences. ‘Lah’ and ‘ah’ are very common expressions, being used to underline words. For Westerners, the curiosities of Singlish are a favourite topic at networking events.

 

Climate

 

Singapore is generally hot and humid throughout the year. On average, temperatures range from an average 31 degrees Celsius in the day to a minimum of 23 degrees at night with high humidity. For those who do not enjoy tropical climate, just about every indoor business venue is efficiently air-conditioned. So is Singapore’s public transport system, including taxis - in fact the air conditioning can be so efficient that carrying a light jacket is advisable.
